FAQs

  • Do I need a referral?

Some insurances, mainly marketplace insurance, do require a referral. If you are not sure about your insurance, give us a call. Also, for gallbladder procedures, you would need a referral from your primary physician to confirm that you need a general surgeon and not a GI visit scheduled. You can self-refer for hernias, hemorrhoids, and screening colonoscopies.

  • Does Dr. Downes do the same procedures as a Dermatologist?

He does many of the same procedures/treatments. If you have a concerning mole or a possible skin cancer it will be removed, in the office, and sent off for testing.

  • How soon can I get an appointment?

Office visits are generally scheduled within 10 days. In-office procedures such as skin lesions or cysts are booked a month in advance.

  • Am I having surgery the same day I see the doctor?

Generally, no. You are scheduled for a consultation with the general surgeon to examine you and determine the next steps.

  • Why do you have two locations? And do I have to have surgery at the same location as my office visit?

Our general surgeon treats patients in Marshall County. We have two locations located in both hospitals. If you are making an appointment for the first available time and date you may absolutely choose which hospital you would like to have your surgery.
